Commuting By Bike

Have you ever considered bicycle commuting to work?  What is holding you back?  Traffic?  No good routes?  Weather?  No time?  There are probably more excuses not to ride your bike to work than there are bicycle commuters.  Our streets are overcrowded because there are not enough bike commuters.  Isn't that an interesting situation?  All of the cars on the road make it difficult to commute by bicycle, yet, if more of us commute by bicycle, there will be less cars on the road!  And less pollution!  So what do you have to do to start commuting by bike?

  1. Find the best route.  If your ride is too far to bike, drive part way and ride the rest of the way.
  2. Have a bike that is appropriate for your ride.  Road conditions will help you determine the right bike.  Road bikes are fast and efficient but are not good for bumpy roads.  Hybrids and mountain bikes are good for most terrain.
  3. Have a reliable bike.  To reduce the possibility of a flat tire, be sure your tires are not too old.  As the rubber on your tire wears, the chances of a flat tire increase.  You can put a tire liner inside your tire to prevent glass and thorns from damaging your bike tube.
  4. Wear a helmet.  This is a must.
  5. If you want to ride in wet weather, get a waterproof jacket, pants and shoe covers.  If you want to avoid buying the clothes, just ride when it is not raining.  That is a great start.
  6. Go for it!!  Sometimes, the hardest part of the journey is getting started.  Some commuters leave a change of clothes at work.  A set of panniers or rear bag is also a good way to carry clothes.  It starts the first day that you ride to work.

If you need any help getting started, call us.  We bike to work and understand the process.
